2026 T20 World Cup: Australia's Final Squad - Cummins Out, Renshaw In (2026)

In a significant development for the Australian cricket team, Pat Cummins has been officially ruled out of the upcoming 2026 T20 World Cup due to an ongoing back injury. In his place, Ben Dwarshuis has been named as a replacement in the final squad. Additionally, Matthew Short has been dropped from the team and replaced by Matt Renshaw, who has been performing well. Notably, Steven Smith will not be part of the squad either, although he remains on standby should any injuries occur.

The good news for fans is that Josh Hazlewood, Tim David, and Nathan Ellis have all been cleared to participate in the World Cup. Hazlewood has been recovering from hamstring and Achilles injuries sustained prior to the Ashes series, while David missed a significant portion of the Big Bash League (BBL) and the Pakistan series due to a hamstring issue. Ellis, too, had been sidelined with a minor hamstring problem, missing the BBL finals and the tour to Pakistan.

Initially, Cummins was included in Australia's provisional 15-man squad with hopes that he could be eased into the tournament as he continued to recover from his back ailment. Unfortunately, since the Adelaide Test against England in mid-December, where he participated in only his second match since July, his condition has not improved sufficiently enough for him to play. After securing the Ashes, he was advised to rest and focus on recuperating for the World Cup. Despite receiving optimistic reports from recent scans in January, Cricket Australia emphasized that Cummins "needs more time" to ensure a full recovery, hinting he might be ready in time for the IPL.

Dwarshuis's inclusion in the squad comes after he was previously overlooked for the provisional selection, but he brings valuable left-arm pace to the squad, which is crucial for diversifying the bowling attack.

Short's dismissal from the squad can be attributed to his struggle with form, alongside the need for another left-handed batter capable of tackling spin effectively during the middle overs of a match. Renshaw, who made his T20 International debut just last Friday in Pakistan, has showcased impressive skills in white-ball formats at both domestic and BBL levels. His performance on ODI debut against India late last year further established his capability, especially against spin bowlers.

Tony Dodemaide, one of Australia’s selectors, stated, "Given Pat requires additional time to heal from his back issue, Ben is an ideal substitute who not only brings a left-arm pace option but also excels in fielding and explosive batting towards the end of innings." He expressed confidence in Dwarshuis's ability to swing the ball effectively and adapt to the anticipated playing conditions.

Dodemaide also praised Renshaw’s versatility, noting his recent accomplishments across different formats for the Queensland Bulls and Brisbane Heat. With the top-order batting lineup secured and anticipated spin-friendly pitches in Sri Lanka for the pool stages, Renshaw’s inclusion adds much-needed support to the middle order, particularly as Tim David readies himself to return to competitive play early in the tournament.

This strategic reshuffle means there is no place for Steven Smith, despite his exceptional form in the Big Bash League, which had many advocates clamoring for his return to the T20 International side. Smith hadn’t played T20Is since March 2024 and was also omitted from the previous World Cup roster. However, the selectors reassured him that he remains a top contender should any player face injury.

"Steve is an outstanding player who has dedicated considerable effort to enhancing his short-format game, reflected in his remarkable stint batting at the top for the Sixers in the Big Bash," Dodemaide commented. He acknowledged the success of the current T20 top order leading into the tournament, asserting confidence in their capabilities.

Smith, primarily recognized as a non-bowling opener, has not bowled in a T20 match since 2019. Since his last T20I appearance, he has participated in 25 T20 innings across various leagues, accumulating two centuries and six fifties, maintaining an impressive average of 49.73 and a strike rate of 156.19. In contrast, Renshaw has played 20 T20 matches, primarily batting in positions 3 to 5, with one century and one half-century to his name, averaging 34.38 and striking at 159.94. Renshaw also contributed with his part-time off-spin bowling, taking five wickets in eight BBL games this season.

Australia boasts a strong opening combination with captain Mitchell Marsh and vice-captain Travis Head, complemented by Cameron Green and Glenn Maxwell, both of whom have found success at the top of the order in T20I matches. Maxwell notably scored a T20I century in Pallekele in 2016, the same venue where Australia will face Sri Lanka during the group stage. Last year, he opened the batting in the Caribbean when Head was unavailable, successfully navigating the spin-heavy strategy employed by West Indies during the powerplay.

Interestingly, Maxwell is also listed as a reserve wicketkeeper, despite never having donned the gloves in a professional match. The primary wicketkeeper for the squad is Josh Inglis, yet Matthew Wade, a former keeper-batter, will be present at the World Cup as part of the coaching staff. Rumors suggest Wade may even bring his playing kit along for emergencies, despite his retirement from international cricket following the 2024 World Cup.

Here is the finalized Australian squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup:

  • Mitchell Marsh (captain)
  • Xavier Bartlett

  • Nathan Ellis
  • Josh Hazlewood
